Do you struggle with speed control on the putting green? If you want to develop good speed on the greens, try the following drill.
 |
- Next, close your right eye and stare at a blade of grass in back of hole and stroke the putt. It may take you a few putts to begin making them but you will soon be making everything from 3 feet. Notice how good your speed control is.
- Now, let’s increase the difficulty. Assume a cross-handed (left hand low) grip, close your right eye and stare at a blade of grass in back of hole as you stroke the putt. Once again, it may take you a few strokes but you will soon be rolling everything in.

- Let’s increase the difficulty once again. Cross your feet, keep your cross-handed grip, close your right eye and stare at a blade of grass in back of hole as you stroke the putt. Once again, notice how good your speed control is once you start to roll the putts in.

- Finally, take a deep breath. As you exhale bring your eyes back to ball with a precise image of a target the size of a blade of grass. Stare through the ball and hold that image as you stroke the putt. Begin your stroke as soon as your eyes return to the ball. If you stare at the ball to long after your eyes return, your image will begin to fade and your speed will be off. Listen for ball to drop in hole.
- Notice that the better your picture, the better your speed on the greens. Remember to adjust your target distance for uphill and downhill putts. Bring your target back to you for downhill putts and move it back for uphill putts. If you have images of a precise target or the end of a line you have visualized into the hole, you have no time to think of your stroke, your score, the value of the putt or anything else. You will play your best golf with precise pictures of what you want to do, not thoughts of how to do it.
