Speed Control
Most students adjust quickly to crosshanded putting for short putts but they struggle with speed control on long putts. Here is a drill that will give you good speed control on both short and long putts. Set up three feet from a hole. Make a practice stroke and feel the path down the target line. Find a blade of grass in the back of the hole. Stare at that blade of grass as you stroke putts. Don’t look at the ball, just the blade of grass. Notice how good your speed is after 10 or 15 putts. Consistent grip pressure as you stare at the blade of grass is another important drill. Changes in grip pressure will alter speed, path and face position. Stroke several putts staring at the blade of grass holding the same grip pressure. Next, set up to targets 20, 30 and 40 feet away. Take a deep breath and bring an image of precise target the distance of your desired putt. Stare through the ball and see your target. Notice how good your speed is after 10 to 15 putts staring at the target. Work on holding the same grip pressure as you stroke longer and longer putts staring at your target. Continue your practice taking a deep breath and bringing an image of your target back to the ball as you exhale. Stare through the ball and stroke your putt with a picture of the target as you complete your exhalation. You will quickly gain confidence in your new set up and excellent speed control with these drills.
